There is no real translation of the Kajishima novels yet... Is it really that hardt to translate them? Not only a synopsis, but a real translation? There is a lot of things not in the Summaries, about Naja for example, or like the note about the future Misaki-rampage... I usually do translations from english to hungarian (ok. since my native language is hungarian, it's much easier for me to translate than write in english ^_^) , Slayers novels, manga, and other books, and I have the 3 Shin Tenchi book. They aren't so big... And I think that a lot of people would be very grateful. Or... on the late AIC forum, someone mentioned that he contacted the VIZ if they wanted to publish the books. It was after Tokyopop announced the Slayers novels. Now, VIZ also publish novels, but I didn't see the Tenchi Muyo on the list. Are there some news about this?

No, there is no complete translation of the novels yet. The novels may not be very big, but the written language is tougher to comprehend. There are many pictographs (kanji) used in the text that are difficult to translate, and this makes the job harder. If Japanese were a simple, written language (such as English or Hungarian), the job would be much easier. I don't know if Viz would be interested. The market may not be big enough for the investment. Perhaps they will be translated sometime in the future. But it will take a lot of time and effort. oni shin

Posts: 350 (09/06/05 17:47:15) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I'll have to disagree with oni_shin, I think the kanji actually make translation easier in a language like Japanese with so many homophones (words that sound the same). The problem is that we have to spend a lot of effort learning the kanji. If you already know them, they're quite helpful. As for the novels, have you checked out that new translation site Mary posted about in the "other sites" board? Well, they said that the TTN are not a priority, but maybe they'll do something from there too.

Poor Misaki-chan big hug I know the problems with japanese writing, I'm trying to learn but I'm not so succesful ^_^ I have the 3 books, nad I started 'Yosho', in the way that I WILL read this... well, after a week, I did read 3 pages, but with a great help of the summaries ^_^ Of course, I'm not an expert, but not only the kanjis are hard, but this in character size, my eyes just pop out to see them well. After a few hours with the JWPce and the book, my eyes wore sore, my back ached and I wanted to die ^_^ But when I showed the book to my japanese knowing friends, they didn't had serious problems, only a few kanjis ("what, there is a kanji for this?" ^_^). And I had the impression that a lot of people here actually read the books so maybe someone will be my hero Or, I just have to learn japanese after all...

They told me that for now, they are just sticking with the Kodansha-published materials, but they felt that with these kind of Japanese novels picking up in popularity, someone may score them sooner rather than later. Personally, I don't want Viz to get them because who knows how much they'd change because "Americans are too stupid to understand Japanese things, so we must fix it for them." I haven't been overly happy with TokyoPop's work on the Slayers novels as I know for a fact the first novel was toned down to appeal to a younger audience (to say nothing of my precious honorifics, of course). They put back the word mazoku for example. As for the honorifics, in the Tenchi Muyo, they are needed since it's so japanese in every aspect. But the Slayers is like a western fantasy story, it's not a problem if it's "Miss Lina" and not "Lina-san" So the first novel really was a disappointment, but the second and after was great. I could check only the second one, but I didn't find such obvious changes like in the first one. And as the story gets stronger, it doesn't seem to be tuned down anymore. I'm more worried about that on the tokyopop page, there are only 6 volumes... out of 15 (or just 8, the first story arc). About VIZ publishing the novels, I don't know. The manga seems ok. enough. But true it is for younger audience.

I have said it once, and I am saying it again. We will have better chance of getting Viz to translate the novel than with anybody else because they already have the connections to the Japanese copyright holders.

A couple of years ago, they mentioned something along the lines of, "maybe we should look into this" but that was as far as it went publically. Again, the problem is recovering the costs. TokyoPop and SevenSeas are two companies that have started bringing Japanese novels over (there may be another company or two, but I can't think of them off the top of my head). TP was very disappointed in sales of the Slayers novels (they didn't help themselves with some domestication choices they made starting in the first novel where they changed a scene to remove a rape attempt) and they stopped publishing them with volume 6. They have stated they licensed volume 7 & 8 to complete the story arc, but those will be a limited-publication event only sold via RightStuf (who runs TP's official store). The GXP novels aren't going to be as big a seller in the U.S. as far as I can tell because the series isn't as well-liked as it is in Japan. The STM novels may or may not do well. Lets put it this way -- IF Viz scored the novels, I would be on the phone BEGGING them to do this right though. ---------------- Tenchi Muyo! FAQ! It seems that another company has bought the rights to the novels in America, but Seven Seas has no idea who did it. They haven't heard anything about the novels beyond that unfortunately. I'm gonna try a few other likely suspects. Edit: Sorry for the double post, but that's what happens in a forum as slow as this. XP Aging is compulsory, maturity is optional.
